Johnson Hired As FHSU Head
Baseball Coach (5/20/10) Fort
Hays State has turned to a former assistant to lead their
baseball program. Steve Johnson has been named the program's
13th head coach, replacing Rick Sabath who stepped down at the
end of the season. Johnson has spent the last seven years as
head coach at Butler Community College, leading the Grizzlies
to three conference titles and one NJCAA World Series
appearance while winning 30 or more games in all but his first
season in El Dorado. Johnson started his coaching career at
Fort Hays State where he was an assistant for two seasons
under both Curtis Hammeke and Bob Fornelli and was on the
staff when the Tigers made their first NCAA II tournament
appearance in 1997. Johnson was also an assistant at Barton
Community College and Louisiana-Monroe.
Soulia Earns ABCA All-South Central Region Honors (5/19/10)
Fort Hays State junior Sloan Soulia earned All-South Central
Region Honors by the American Baseball Coaches Association for
the 2010 season. He earned a second-team nod as a designated
hitter. Soulia finished the year with a batting average of
.360 with 10 home runs and 45 runs scored along with a
team-leading 53 RBI and 16 doubles. Soulia was an All-MIAA
Second Team selection as a designated hitter.
