Baseball at MIAA Tournament (5/9/08)
The Fort Hays State Tigers begin play at the MIAA baseball
tournament in Kansas City this evening against conference
regular season champ Emporia State. The Tigers dropped three
of their final four to Pittsburg State last weekend
and are the number-four seed. The Hornets won their
second MIAA regular season title and are ranked fourth in the
country at 46-7. The Hornets swept their four conference games
with the Tigers and won two non-conference games earlier in
the year. Second-seed Central Missouri plays Missouri Western
at noon then it’s the Tigers and Hornets at six o’clock at
Community America Ballpark in Kansas City. It’s the first
time the MIAA Tournament has been held at a neutral site.

Salvages Final Game of Series (5/4/08)
The Fort Hays State Tiger baseball team salvaged the final
game of their regular season ending four-game series with
Pittsburg State. After losing 5-4 and 15-7 on Saturday the
Tigers dropped the opener 4-3 yesterday before scoring 17 runs
on 15 hits in a 17-5 rout in game two. James Simpson (3-0)
settled down after a rough start to get the win, allowing
three earned runs on six hits. The Tigers hit five home runs
in the game including two from Greg Beiker. Fort Hays
launched nine over the weekend to set the school record of
home runs in a season with 83. The Tigers are 27-28 and 21-15
in the MIAA where they finish fourth. They will be the fourth
seed for the MIAA Tournament in Kansas City and open with
regular season champ Emporia State Friday evening.

Takes 3 of 4 From SBU (4/26/08)
The Fort Hays State Tigers take three of four at
Southwest Baptist over the weekend. The Tigers
won the opener 10-3 and the final two games
Saturday 11-1 and 10-2. The only loss was the
second game of the series which was suspended
Friday night due to darkness. The Tigers scored
nine in the top of the ninth to take a 17-13
lead but the Bearcats rallied with six in the
bottom of the inning for an 18-17 victory. The
Tigers remain in third place in the MIAA at
24-25 overall and 20-12 in the conference. The
Tigers will try to lock down a spot in the MIAA
Tournament this weekend when they host Pittsburg
State in a four-game series beginning Friday
night.

Baseball Swept By UNO (4/23/08)
The Fort Hays State Tigers had their bats silenced yesterday,
dropping a pair of 1-run games to Nebraska-Omaha. Fort Hays
rallied for two in the bottom of the seventh but lost the
opener 5-4. The Mavericks used a pair of solo homers in the
fifth and sixth innings to break a 1-1 tie and win the second
game 3-2. Fort Hays left the bases loaded twice in both games
and stranded ten runners in game one and seven in game two. Pat
Huddleston pitched five solid innings in game one but
suffers the loss. Donnie Moore gives up all three runs
in game two and drops to 2-2. Tyler Robbins hit a solo homer
for the Tigers in the first game and Dusty Washburn had
two hits in each game to extend his hitting streak to 17
games. UNO has now won 20 of their last 21. The Tigers fall to
21-24. They continue conference play tomorrow and Saturday at
Southwest Baptist.

Shares MIAA Pitcher of the Week Honors (4/23/08)
Fort Hays
State's Eric Gilliand has been named the MIAA
Co-Pitcher of the Week for his efforts against Central
Missouri this past weekend. Gilliland shares the honor with
Missouri Western's Chris Jackson. The junior from Concordia
came within one out of a nine-inning complete-game win at
Central Missouri, as the
Tigers became the first team to sweep the Mules at home in a
doubleheader
since 1997. He allowed only one earned run in the first eight
innings.

Baseball Defeats Newman ((4/22/08)
The Fort Hays State baseball team continued their recent hot
play with a 12-3 win at Newman University in Wichita last
night. No other details are available this morning. The Tigers
have won 10 of their last 13 and improve to 21-22. They will
host Nebraska-Omaha in a doubleheader this afternoon at 3pm.
The Tigers lost twice to the Mavericks in Omaha last week.
Yesterday UNO has their 18-game winning streak snapped with a
7-2 loss at Washburn. We’ll have both games for you today on

Baseball Splits At UCM, Takes 3 of 4 In Series (4/20/08)
The Fort Hays State Tiger baseball team has a great weekend in
Warrensburg. Saturday, the Tigers became the first team in
eleven years to sweep the Mules in a doubleheader at home,
yesterday they split their two games with Fort Hays winning
8-5 in the opener and losing 12-6 in game two. Trailing 4-1
after four in the first contest, the Tigers scored three in
the fifth to tie then added three in the seventh to take the
lead. Tyler Robbins RBI double put the Tigers ahead. Greg
Bieker added a bunt single and Garrett Brown a run
scoring single. Garrett Huck, who picked up his first
career save Saturday, retired all five that he faced for the
win. In game two, The Tiger fell behind 6-0 before coming back
to tie the game only to give up six in the seventh. Greg
Bieker hit two home runs, a solo shot in the fifth and a
two-run blast in the sixth. Ryan Majercik hit a two-run
homer in the seventh and Garrett Brown's a solo shot. The
Tigers improve to 20-22 and 17-11 in the MIAA where they
remain in third place, just three games behind the second
place Mules. FHSU hosts Nebraska-Omaha in a doubleheader
Wednesday before resuming conference play at Southwest Baptist
Friday.

Baseball Swept At UNO (4/15/08)
The Fort Hays State Tigers six-game win-streak came to an end
yesterday as they drop two at Nebraska-Omaha who has now won
14-straight. The Tigers lose in the opener 10-7 then fall 11-5
in game two. It was another big day for catcher Ryan
Majercik who hit a three-run homer in the Tigers five-run
fifth in game one. He finished with three hits, all of them
home runs and five RBI’s in the two games. Dusty Washburn
went 3-for-3 with two doubles in the opener and doubled in
game two to run his hitting streak to ten games. Greg
Bieker had a pair of hits in game one to run his streak to
12 before going 0-for-3 in the second game. The Mavericks hit
six home runs in the two games and are now 26-9. The Tigers
fall to 17-21. They return to MIAA play this weekend with a
four-game series at #14 Central Missouri.
Washburn MIAA Hitter of the Week
Fort Hays State Dusty Washburn is the MIAA Hitter of
the Week. Washburn hit .650 and drove home at least one
run in each of the Tigers six games. He ended up with six home
runs and 16 RBI’s last week and became the first Tiger since
Jeff Bieker in 2004 to hit for the cycle in Saturday’s win
over Truman State.

Sweeps Truman (4/13/08)
The Fort Hays State Tigers capped a wild weekend with a
doubleheader sweep of Truman State Sunday and take all four
games of the series at Larks Park. Saturday they set a new
school record for runs in a game in their 32-5 victory then
beat the Bulldogs 16-5 in the second game. Yesterday they hit
eight home runs and win 11-7 and 15-14. Brent Biggs hit
a second inning grand slam as the Tigers built an 11-2 lead in
the first game. In the second contest, they fell behind 7-0
after the first two innings before Corey Gaudet, Dusty
Washburn, A.J. Levanduski and Tyler Robbins
hit consecutive home runs. Dusty Washburn put the
Tigers up 13-11 with a three-run blast in the seventh. After
Truman scored three in the top of the eighth to retake the
lead, Gaudet’s two-run double put the Tigers back on top for
good. Gaudet finished 3-for-6 with 6 RBI’s in game two.
Dusty Washburn homered twice and drove in four. The Tigers hit
eight home runs in the two games yesterday and 19 in the four
games as they improve to 17-19 overall and 14-10 in the MIAA
where they are alone in third place.

Baseball Adjusts Weekend Schedule (4/11/08)
The schedule for this weekend’s four-game series between
Fort Hays State and Truman State is being adjusted. The two
will not play tonight, instead they will play a doubleheader
tomorrow beginning at one then two more on Sunday beginning at
noon. You can hear Sunday’s games on SportsRadio 1400 KAYS.

Baseball Sweeps Washburn (4/8/08)
The Fort Hays State baseball team had to rally in both of
their games with Washburn yesterday, but come away with two
wins. The Tiger fell behind 7-0 after an inning and a half in
the first game but win 10-7. Kevin Large allowed only
one hit in five and-a-third innings of relief for the win. The
Tigers tied the game on Tyler Robbins two-run homer in
the fifth then scored three in the sixth to take the lead. In
the second game, Washburn led 3-0 before the Tigers came back
to tie it with two in the fifth and one in the sixth. Brian
Thompson gave up a homer to the first batter he faced in
the seventh then retired the next nine for the win. The Tigers
tied the game with a run in the ninth then won it on Logan
Burditt’s one-out single to center. The Tigers move to
13-19 overall and to 10-10 in the MIAA. They host Truman State
in a four-game series this weekend.

Baseball Swept at Emporia State (4/7/08)
The Fort Hays State baseball team was swept over the weekend
at #6 Emporia State. The Tigers drop the series finale 13-3
yesterday. Like they did all series, the Hornets jumped out
early scoring four in the first and five in the third for a
9-2 lead. The
Tigers scored two in the second inning on a two-run Logan
Burditt home run. The only other run came in the fourth on
a Corey Gaudet RBI single. Tiger starting pitcher Kevin
Large allowed six runs, all earned, to the Hornets in two
innings. Friday ESU won 14-8 then took two on Saturday by
scores of 23-8 and 15-5. The Hornets have now won 25-straight
and remain unbeaten in the MIAA at 18-0. The Tigers fall to
11-19 and 8-10 in the conference where they are tied for
sixth. The Tigers host Washburn in a two o’clock
doubleheader tomorrow which we will have on SportsRadio 1400
KAYS beginning at 1:45pm.

Baseball Sweeps Washburn (4/1/08)
The Fort Hays State baseball team used strong starting
pitching from Eric Gilliland and Kevin Large to
sweep Washburn 4-2 and 9-0 Tuesday and run their winning
streak to five. Gilliland retired 19 of the final 20 Ichabod
hitters including 16 in-a-row to end the first game. The
Tigers rallied with three in the fifth and one in the sixth. Garrett
Brown’s pinch-hit homer tied the game. FHSU (11-15, 8-6
MIAA) then took the lead later in the inning on Brett
Becker’s single. Topeka native Kevin Large took a
no-hitter into the sixth inning of game two. He left in the
top of the eighth after allowing just three hits. Fort Hays
struck for four in the third then added two in the sixth and
three in the eighth. Tyler Robbins and Greg Bieker
both had a pair of hits and each drove in two. Brett Becker
also had two RBI’s. The Tigers have won seven of their last
nine and are now tied for third in the MIAA with Missouri
Southern for third. They face conference leader Emporia State
in a four-game series starting Friday.

Baseball Splits At Missouri Southern (3/22/08)
The Fort Hays State baseball team split their four-game MIAA
series at Missouri Southern over the weekend. The Tiger
dropped the opener 15-6 Thursday then exploded for 40 runs in a
sweep Friday by scores of 16-1 and 24-11. The Lions won the
finale Saturday 14-4. Fort Hays is now 6-14 overall and 3-5 in
the MIAA. They play at Nebraska-Kearney Tuesday night before
resuming MIAA play at home this weekend against Northwest
Missouri State.
FHSU Loses Series Opener At Southern
(3/20/08)
The Fort Hays State baseball team’s pitching woes continue.
They give up 21 hits and lose at Missouri Southern 15-6 last
night for their fourth-straight loss which drops them to 1-4
in the MIAA. The Lions scored two in the first, two in the
second and one in the third and led 8-0 before the Tigers
(4-13, 1-4 MIAA) scored five in the fifth on a Brett Becker
grand slam and Dusty Washburn solo homer. Washburn
would add another solo shot in the eighth. Southern (5-14, 3-2
MIAA) put the game away with four in the seventh and three in
the eighth. Eric Gilliland gave up eight runs, four
earned on ten hits in four innings for the loss. The two play
a doubleheader today before wrapping up the series with one on
Saturday.

Drop Final Three Games To Western (3/17/08)
The Fort Hays State baseball team drops the final three
games of their MIAA opening series against Missouri Western.
The Tigers rallied for a 6-5 win over the Griffons Friday
night then lost 5-0 and 14-4 Saturday. In the series finale,
the Griffons win 13-6. Starter

a
third of an inning. Thompson allowed six earned runs on five
hits. The Tigers fall to 4-12. They play at Rockhurst tomorrow
and Wednesday.

Baseball Splits Games In Emporia (3/11/08)
The Fort Hays State baseball team snapped their five-game
losing streak, scoring four in the second in an 8-3 win over
Minnesota-Duluth yesterday in Emporia. Garrett Brown
homered and Brent Biggs drove in three helping Kevin
Large to his first win. The Tigers then fell apart in the
seventh inning in their game with Emporia State, giving up six
runs and lost 14-8. Fort Hays had scored a run in the top of
the seventh to go up 8-7 but hit four batters in the bottom of
the inning. James Fischer suffered the loss. Chase
Schippers went 5-for-5 at the plate and Dusty Washburn
drove in four. The Tigers are now 3-9 on the season. They open
conference play at home this weekend against Missouri Western.

Baseball Drops Two In Emporia (3/10/08)
The Fort Hays State baseball team lost two games in Emporia
yesterday. The Tigers dropped a 6-5 decision to
Minnesota-Duluth then a 5-0 decision to Emporia State. Eric
Gilliland pitched eight innings against the Hornets,
allowing just one earned run on four hits but took the loss.
The Tigers committed four errors in the game. FHSU has now
lost eight of their last nine and are 2-8 on the season. They
play Duluth and Emporia State again today.

Baseball Swept At #3 Ouachita Baptist (2/25/08)
The Fort Hays State baseball team lost 4-2 at #3 Ouachita
Baptist yesterday. Saturday the Tigers lost both ends of a
doubleheader and were held to just six runs in the three-game
series. Matt Augustine allowed just four runs, two
earned over seven innings yesterday to take the loss. Saturday
the Tigers lost 2-1 and 11-3 and are now 2-6 on the season.

Splits With UNK (2/16/08)
The Fort Hays State baseball team split their doubleheader
with Nebraska-Kearney Saturday at Larks Park. The Tigers lost
the opener 9-2 then rallied to win game two 13-9. Sunday's
doubleheader was postponed due to inclement weather. FHSU is
now 2-3 on the season.

Baseball Loses In Texas (2/4/08)
The Fort Hays State baseball team dropped the final game of
their season- opening three game series at ninth-ranked Angelo
State 14-9 Sunday. The Rams raced to a 5-0 lead in the first
two innings then scored four in the third for a 9-2 lead.
After the Tigers scored three in the fifth, Angelo scored five
in the sixth to put the game away. Kevin Large allowed
five runs in an inning and-a-third for the loss. The Tigers
won the series opener 11-1 on Friday then lost 2-1 Saturday.
They are scheduled to host Kansas Wesleyan in their home
opener Saturday.

Signs 19, Hires Two New Coaches For 2008
Fort Hays State baseball coach Rick Sabath has
announced the signing of 19 players and the hiring of two new
assistants for the 2008 season. 13 of the 19 players signed
are junior college transfers with the other six high school
seniors. Seven of the transfers hail from Kansas, three from
Colorado and one each from Nebraska, Idaho and Washington.
Among the high school players signed are Andy Hammeke
from TMP-Marian and Great Bend’s Matt Patzner. Sabath
has also hired Nolan Deitrich and Mike Saddler
as assistant coaches. Saddler has been an assistant at Baker
and is a Colby native while Dietrich comes from Washburn.
Sabath has also announced that graduate assistant Nate
Thompson is leaving to become an assistant at Nebraska.
