8 Men's Basketball End 2-Game Skid. (2/6/10)
The Fort Hays State men's basketball team ended their
two-game losing streak with a 74-62 road win at Washburn. The
Tigers never trailed, using an early 9-0 run to build a
10-point lead. A 14-3 run midway through the second half
pushed the lead to 18 and the Ichabods never got any closer
than 11 the rest of the way. FHSU shot 57-percent from the
floor and hit 6 of 12 from 3-point range. They did struggle at
the free throw line, hitting just 14 of 29. Willie Hassell led
four Tigers in double-figures with 17. Dijon Smith, making his
first start of the season, added 15 as the Tigers improve to
18-3 and 12-2 in the MIAA.
Women's Basketball Falls Short Of Upset Bid (2/6/10)
The Fort Hays State Lady Tigers were close to ending their
19-game losing streak to nationally ranked teams, but Washburn
used a couple of key 3-pointers to hold off the Tigers upset
bid, 50-45. Fort Hays fell behind 10-0 but over the first four
minutes, but rallied to within one at halftime. They tied the
game at 42 with just under five minutes to play but Washburn's
Hope Gregory hit back-to-back 3-pointers to push the lead to
six. The Tigers shot only 26-percent for the game and were led
by Erica Biel's 15 points. Freshman Traci Keyser added 14 and
Naomi Bancroft 11. FHSU is now 15-6 and 8-6 in the MIAA.
No. 15 Wrestling Wins 7th Straight (2/6/10)
The Fort Hays State wrestling team wins their seventh straight
dual, defeating Colorado Mines 35-12. The Tigers won eight of
the ten matches, two by fall and two by major decision. No. 4
Tommy Edgmon (125) won be forfeit. The Tigers two other ranked
wrestlers, No. 4 Danny Grater (157) and No. 7 Blake Mallow
(165) also won. Malloy in double-overtime. With the victory,
the Tigers improve to 8-3 on the year and remain atop the RMAC
standings with a 6-0 conference record.
Wrestling Defeats No. 12 Western State (2/5/10)
The 15th-ranked Fort Hays State wrestling team remained
unbeaten in the RMAC wtih a 27-10 won over No. 12 Western
State at Gross Coliseum. FHSU won seven of the ten matches
including the first three in jumping out to a 12-0 lead. Two
of the Tiger three ranked wrestlers won. Tommy Edgmon (No. 4,
125) won 8-7 and Blake Malloy (No. 7, 165) took a 10-7
decision. Danny Grater (No. 4, 157) lost 7-4. The Tigers moved
to 7-3 overall and 5-0 in the RMAC.
Football
Signs Eight For 2010 (2/3/10)
Fort Hays State football coach Kevin Verdugo has announced
the signing of eight high school seniors for the 2010 season.
The group includes two defensive backs, two offensive
lineman, one running back, one defensive tackle, one wide
receiver and a quarterback. Four of the signees are from
Oklahoma, two from Arizona and two from Texas. Verdugo is expecting to sign four more high school
seniors as well as several transfers to bring the the recruiting class to 22. [more]
